COMMUNICATIONS
As we struggled to define a mission
for communications, we hypothetically thought about the readers of the Voice
and postulated their reasons for opening the mailings. We came up with the following
Top Ten Reasons for Reading the large Voice:
-
1. You are
having a birthday
-
2. Your child
is an acolyte and you want to know when they serve
-
3. You are on Altar Guild, Vestry, a Lay
Reader, or other active participant
-
4. You want to
see if we have a new rector
-
5.
You are
fascinated by church finances
-
6. You like the
advertisements on the back
-
7.
You think
the articles are inspirational
-
8. You are a
secret proofreader and grammar critic
-
9. You always
read the lesson and readings ahead of time
-
10. You want to
find out if there are any social activities
or ……..
you are just interested in the well being of the church !! If so you can
help.
Webster defines communications as the act of conveying or imparting
or getting
in touch. St. John
in the Wilderness is embarking on a process to improve our communications. What does that mean to you as parishioners?
It is important to remember that communication is a two way process.
You
need to know what the management of your church, the vestry and staff are
doing, but they also need to know what the parish needs and wants from their
spiritual and church life.
Getting in touch implies
that those providing or announcing the communication vehicle should also
understand and relate to the impact that the communication has on the
recipient. At St. John in the Wilderness we have a great many means of
communication. Some of the most visible
are the:
-
Large Voice
-
Small
Voice
-
Youth
Voice
-
The Web
Site
-
Mailings
-
Announcements
-
Postings
As this committee embarks
on its mission we will be exploring the use, value, and benefits of these tools. We have established a communications center
with a box open for your suggestions and ideas. What do you want to know about?
What is the best way of providing the information? What do you like and not like about the
present communications? We in turn will use your thoughts to open up the flow
of information from the vestry and staff to the parish.
